Whenever you have a doubt regarding some definition or concept, standard books must be the first place to go. The below table gives the recommended standard textbooks to be followed for GATE CSE. Standard books are the reference books for GATE CSE. You need not read every line of the book or remember everything. GATE being a conceptual exam, what you need is correct understanding rather than memorization skill to reproduce whatever is in the textbook. For example, if you already know how to normalize a relation to BCNF or to convert an NFA to DFA, then you can skip reading those portions from the text book.

even if I follow a single book for each subject just the way it is prescribed I will have to cover atleast 100 pages a day to complete the course within 6months which is simply not possible .
Then for what purpose is GATE syllabus given? First thing to do is to filter the chapters based on that.

A single standard book is enough 90% of time. Some topic if missing can be understood via weblinks (given on the subject webpage). I know some coaching person is propagating news that we force students to buy "ALL" standard books which is impossible to learn. I guess that guy will soon say that we force people to buy book from flipkart as well as amazon since the edition date is different. I hope Engineering graduates have common sense and can do what is required.
